Site development for dental implants may include bone grafting in an extraction socket, which is best done at the time a tooth is removed.

When a patient loses a tooth, either from an infection or from a fracture, this is the best time to perform the bone grafting procedure in the extraction socket. The extraction socket, where the tooth was removed, is going to shrink by 40% within the first six months. By grafting bone, I am able to create a stable blood clot in the socket to preserve the majority of the bone volume.

The ultimate treatment for a removed tooth is a dental implant. Creating proper height and width of bone volume allows the dental implant procedure to be much simpler and more predictable.

“Site development” is a term we use to describe preserving the socket where the tooth was extracted. The best opportunity that we have to regenerate bone that you have lost from an infection is at the time we are taking the tooth out. Doing it at that time is also going to be more pleasant for the patient, rather than asking them to come back for bone grafting at a second visit and having that additional recovery period.

When bone is added in that extraction socket it is done to stabilize that blood clot, and as that heals the implant placement is going to become much easier and much more predictable. Bone width and bone height are the two things that I need when placing a dental implant and that is what bone grafting accomplishes; it maintains bone volume.

I tell patients that with bone grafting, the procedure is not going to feel any different.  There is minimal discomfort, and the patient’s medication is going to be exactly the same as if the bone grafting was not done at that same time.
