Long Island periodontist Dr. Vasiliki Batalias explains how the LANAP produces less discomfort faster recovery over traditional periodontal treatment.

One advantage of the Laser Assisted New Attachment Procedure (LANAP) over traditional periodontal disease surgeries is that it targets only the diseased tissue and it actually kills bacteria that we are not able to kill by mechanical therapy. The other advantage is that since it is minimally invasive, the recovery for the patient is generally much easier. Most patients take some over the counter medication such as ibuprofen or Tylenol and generally do very well. It is also a quicker recovery so they can go back to their normal daily life and activities sooner.

The advantages for us as the provider is there are many patients who have undergone gum surgery, and although they may have recurrent disease, they absolutely refuse treatment. LANAP gives us an opportunity to help patients who otherwise would have avoided necessary treatment.

When patients have had their periodontal disease treated previously with traditional surgery, almost 100% of the time they comment on how much they prefer LANAP because it is more comfortable and their recovery is faster. If this is their first time having gum treatment, they usually tell us that they took ibuprofen for the first day and were generally fine after that.

For certain periodontal conditions, in addition to the LANAP procedure, some patients may have other treatment that needs to be done, such as a tooth extraction. In these cases, although most of their mouth will be treatable with the laser, they may still need to have some conventional treatment as well.

When it comes to treating periodontal disease, the Laser Assisted New Attachment Procedure (LANAP) has great advantages of reduced recovery time and it is a more comfortable procedure for the patient.
