Dental Implant Problems and How to Avoid Them!

Dental Implants, as a whole, have a very high success rate. Some people do experience dental implant problems. However, it is estimated that only about 5 percent of dental implants fail. The Farber Center wants to keep you informed of the steps you can take to help minimize the chance of dental implant problems.

Gum Disease

An untreated infection will present a variety of hurdles regarding possible dental implants. Gum disease is an infection that can affect the gums and jaw bone. Unresolved, the infection can develop around the implant and cause failure.

Insufficient Bone in the Jaw

Successful dental implants are dependent upon the bone that supports the implant. Without a healthy jawbone able to support the implant, the implant will likely fail as well.

Poor Dental Maintenance

Unfortunately, if you suffer from a condition that limits your ability to thoroughly clean your teeth, implants may not be right for you. Good oral hygiene is a vital part of maintaining a dental implant, so constantly and thorough cleaning is necessary.

Smoking

Similar to the last entry, smoking can make you a poor candidate for dental implants. The Journal of International Society of Preventive & Community Dentistry published a study showing that a procedure with a 95% success rate drops to only 80% if you are a smoker. 80% is still a pretty good success rate, but it could certainly be better. It is recommended that you stop smoking (period!) one week prior to the implant procedure and not resume until about 2 months later.

Medical Conditions Causing Dental Implant Problems

Autoimmune Disease or conditions like Rheumatoid Arthritis or Diabetes can cause your body to heal at a slower pace. A slower healing process can prevent osseointegration—the process of an implant fusing or integrating with your jawline.
