What Is Gum Disease?
Gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, is an infection of the tissues that hold your teeth in place. It is typically caused by poor oral hygiene that allows plaque—a sticky film of bacteria—to build up on the teeth and harden. In its early stage, called gingivitis, the gums can become swollen, red, and may bleed. In its more serious form, called periodontitis, the gums can pull away from the tooth, bone can be lost, and the teeth may loosen or fall out.
What Is LANAP?
LANAP is an FDA-cleared laser treatment designed to treat periodontal disease by targeting and removing infected tissue without harming healthy tissue. LANAP slows or entirely stops attachment loss and decreases pocket depth. It allows your body to begin recovering from a chronic oral infection without the need for a scalpel or sutures. It promotes regeneration of the tissues and bone around your teeth, leading to improved oral health and a brighter smile.
Benefits of LANAP Periodontal Treatment
Laser therapy treatment can provide patients with various benefits, including:
- Minimally Invasive: Unlike traditional surgery, LANAP uses a laser to selectively remove diseased tissue, reducing pain and recovery time.
- Promotes Gum Tissue Regeneration: The laser stimulates bone and tissue regeneration, helping to rebuild the structures that support your teeth.
- Less Discomfort: Most patients experience less pain and discomfort during and after the procedure compared to conventional surgery.
- Quicker Recovery: With LANAP, recovery times are shorter, allowing you to return to your daily activities sooner.
How Does the LANAP Procedure Work?
At Farber Center for Periodontics and Dental Implants, our Long Island periodontists will do the following:
- Laser Treatment: The PerioLase® MVP-7™ laser targets and removes the infected gum tissue without affecting the healthy tissue.
- Scaling and Root Planing: The laser treatment is followed by scaling and root planing to remove tartar and plaque from the root surfaces.
- Laser Reapplication: The laser is used again to form a clot, which helps the tissues reattach to the teeth.
- Healing and Regeneration: Over time, the laser-treated areas heal, and new bone and tissue regenerate, providing a stronger foundation for your teeth.
If you’re ready to be periodontal disease-free, contact our Medford or Happauagge dental offices for your appointment.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long does the LANAP procedure last?
The LANAP procedure typically takes one to two hours, and most patients can return to their normal activities the next day.
Will my insurance cover LANAP?
Many dental insurance plans cover LANAP as a treatment for periodontal disease. Your office staff can help you determine your coverage and assist with insurance claims.
How effective is LANAP compared to traditional gum surgery?
LANAP is as effective, if not more so, than traditional gum surgery in treating periodontal disease. The laser specifically targets diseased gum tissue while promoting the regeneration of healthy tissue, often resulting in better overall outcomes.
Are there any risks or side effects associated with LANAP?
LANAP is a low-risk procedure with minimal side effects. Some patients may experience mild discomfort or swelling, which usually resolves quickly. As with any medical procedure, it’s important to follow your periodontist’s post-treatment instructions to ensure an optimal healing process.
